Q. I've been a finalist for a few jobs, but haven't gotten them. What should I do?

Submitted by Tom Collinson, Buford, Georgia

Dear Tom,

Being passed over for several jobs is a discouraging experience. However, it's a good thing that you have interviewed for several jobs - it means your skills set and background qualified you for those positions and that you were a legitimate and worthy candidate. Here are some ideas for how you can make sure you shine brighter in your next interview.

Ask for tips from former interviewers.
The first thing you could consider is asking former interviewers for earnest advice. Ask why you were not chosen for the position, and keep an open mind when you listen to their answers. If another candidate was chosen, find out what they had that you didn't and think about how you can improve.

Practice interviewing.
Find a friend who is willing to give you a practice job interview. Many people get nervous during interviews, and practicing will not only help you rehearse your answers to common interview questions, but it will also make the interview process feel less stressful.

Expand your experience.
Join a local trade association or professional networking group. You may find great tips and information about your industry and meet people who can help you find new positions. This is also great experience for your resume because it shows you are sincerely interested and involved.

Proofread your resume.
Proofread your resume again and again to make sure it's free of errors and typos. This should be a perfect document, and even a small error could be the only difference between you and another similar candidate.

Don't forget the dress code.
Always dress appropriately for job interviews. In most cases, a traditional suit is appropriate. If you do not have one, consider buying a suit that you look and feel great in. The investment will pay off, and you'll have the right outfit ready when interviewers call.

Always write a thank you letter to interviewers.
Always write a professional thank you letter to interviewers for their time and consideration. Writing a thank you letter may not guarantee that you get the job, but not writing one could guarantee that you don't get it.

Remember to stay positive and keep trying. Everything will work out, and the hard work will be worth it when you find a great job.
