Deck the Halls with Resumes & Cover Letters

Searching for a job in the next few months? Don’t let the holiday season slow you down! Job seekers often think it’s the wrong time, but the truth is that looking for a new position during the holidays can give you a leg up on the competition.

Although some executives may be in and out of the office during the holidays, many are looking for a go-getter like you.
So, while other job hunters are doing their holiday shopping, now is a great time to kick your job search into high gear.

Here are six reasons why ‘tis the season—to go job hunting!

  1. Today’s business environment is competitive, and there are more open jobs than workers to fill them. Companies cannot afford to wait until January to fill key positions.

  2. Many employers have just received 2007 budget approval and will be looking to fill open positions as early in the new year as possible. There also may be money left in their 2006 budget from open positions that were never filled—motivating them to use it or lose it.

  3. While there are usually fewer job postings and want-ads toward year-end, the ones you see are usually priority jobs that need to be filled quickly. With fewer people replying to ads during this time, there is less competition than usual, which is to your advantage.

  4. You can leverage the season to get your name in front of recruiters or networking contacts by sending them a holiday greeting card. It’s a nice way to remind them of who you are and a great way to differentiate yourself from the pack.

  5. Many executives have fewer meetings on their calendars at this time of year, so setting up introductory interviews with them, over the phone or over lunch, can be easier to accomplish.

  6. Temporary opportunities abound during the holidays, and can help you get your foot in the door and earn some extra holiday cash at the same time.

And don’t forget the social networking aspect of the holiday season. Holiday parties and socials may enable you to meet other business professionals who can help you, and with more people attending their association chapter meetings during the holidays, you can leverage those networks as well.

Happy Holidays!
