How to Get the Most Out of an Internship

Getting an internship is just the first step. To get the most out of it, you have to do more than just show up and follow directions. Internships can help you learn about the inner workings of a job or industry. They give you real-life experience, help you develop professional skills and build a network of contacts. However, you’ll only get out of your internship what you put into it.

Internships offer an array of benefits, including valuable exposure to different management styles and work environments so you can learn what type of work suits you best.  Here are some tips to help you on your way to a successful internship and a successful career:

  • Define the internship.
Create a detailed understanding of your duties and performance expectations. Get clarification if you don’t understand something.
  • Be professional.
Be respectful and dress in professional attire. Arrive on time and resist the temptation to leave early. Be mindful of your place as an intern.
  • Ask questions.
Don’t assume anything. Seek advice and raise questions. Be open-minded about new ideas and procedures.
  • Always do your best.
Hard workers get noticed. Don’t complain about repetitive tasks – good performance on menial tasks can lead to more responsibility down the road. Stay positive.
  • Take the initiative.
Show enthusiasm. Be willing to do what it takes to get the job done. Volunteer to help with a project that interests you. Speak up. If you have an idea, share it.
  • Observe and learn.
Never shun a chance to learn more about the company or industry. Attend meetings and participate in training workshops. View every assignment and every request as an opportunity to learn.
  • Network.
Meet people outside your department. Interact with coworkers – ask them how they got their jobs, what they do, etc.
  • Ask for feedback.
Meet with your supervisor on a regular basis. Ask about what you’re doing well and if you should be doing anything differently. Never leave your internship without a written reference.

Don’t go into an internship with the notion that since you’re not getting paid, it’s not a real job. This is a great chance to meet professionals in the business and gain valuable contacts. Internships can lead to full- or part-time positions within a company. So, spend your time wisely and your internship will be the first step to a successful career.
