Determining if a Company’s Culture is Right for You

Finding a great job is about more than just landing an interview, impressing the boss and earning a paycheck. A truly great job will also align well with your priorities and personality, which means company culture is a major factor in job searching. A job interview is the best place to asses a company’s culture, but with lots to think about during an interview, it can be easy to miss clues about what a company’s culture is really like.

Keep your eyes and ears open.
During the interview, it’s sometimes difficult to think about more than just impressing your interviewer. However, it’s important to listen as much as you talk and be aware of what’s going on around you. Pay attention to how you are treated, note any phrases the interviewer repeats, and pay attention to the questions. Do the questions go back to a common theme? These are all good clues about the job and the tone of the company.

Go with your gut.
As you are interviewed, are you treated with courtesy and respect? It’s important to pay attention to whether you are treated like a guest or a captive. Notice how you are handled by the receptionist and anyone else you meet. Also take note of whether your interviewer is on time and of how prepared they are.

Speak up.
It’s always important to ask questions when being interviewed. The questions you ask will show how serious of a candidate you are and how much you have done your homework. Some good questions about company culture could be what makes employees most successful, what the managerial style is, how conflicts are resolved, whether the company has a code of ethics, and a few words or phrases that describe the company culture.

Research and network.
With so many online networking tools available, you’re bound to be able to find someone you know who has worked for, or knows someone who has worked for, the company you are interviewing with. Query your network, and ask what it’s really like to work there. Most people will be honest, and insider info can really help determine if a company is the best fit for you.

Don’t ignore culture in your job search. Remember that even if you think you have found the perfect position, company culture can make or break your satisfaction in a job.
