Top recruiters' job hunting tips

Job advice is all over the Internet, including at our Career Center, so there’s no excuse for making certain blunders when virtually every resource cautions against them.

For example, be sure you know how to correctly pronounce the names of all goods and services, and the company name if it’s a tough one (think Spherion®). For further help taking the guesswork out of your job search, Forbes.com offers additional tips.

  • If you’re interviewing with an individual who has a complicated name, call ahead to ask a secretary or associate how it is pronounced.
  • Turn off your cell phone during interviews. A ringing phone tells the interviewer you’re not serious about the job and don’t respect their time. Always make eye contact with the person you’re speaking to.
  • During the week before the interview, read the latest news about the company. You don’t want to be caught be surprise, and being able to discuss the latest news demonstrates your interest in the company.
  • Always run your cover letter and resume through the spell checker. Then have an eagle-eyed friend proofread it. This sounds obvious, but many candidates flub it, according to recruiters, and a bad impression is hard to overcome.
  • Keep your resume and cover letter short—a maximum of two pages serves as a good introduction to the highlights. A resume is intended to catch an interviewer’s attention, not provide chapter and verse of your entire work history.
  • Be memorable—you’ve got to distinguish yourself from the pack. Do this by being topnotch and professional. Loud ties or miniskirts will create an impression, but not the one you want to make.
  • At the close of the interview, always thank the interviewer for taking the time to meet with you. Briefly summarize what you can contribute and why you’re the best candidate for the job. A firm handshake will also help the interviewer remember you well.
