Top Jobs for 2009

In a rocky economy, lots of people want to know what the most stable jobs are. With so many layoffs, working in a steady industry in a high-demand position is a big plus. What are the sectors that will be in demand in 2009? Here are some predictions.

Health care is always needed.
People need health care even if the economy isn't great. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, some of the fastest growing occupations include medical assistants, physical therapists, physician assistants, home health aides, and medical records and health information technicians. Dental hygienists are also in strong demand.

Think internationally.
If you have a strong knowledge of another culture or language, you could have more options than you think. International business could be a way to get great career experience and exposure, particularly if you are willing to relocate.

Get green.
Environmental issues are becoming more and more important, and the green movement is a growing new industry. If you have or can learn skills in sustainability issues and green practices, you will boost your resume even if you don't enter the environmental sector since many companies are involved in the movement.

Security is always important.
Security is an issue no matter what state the economy is in. Crimes don't stop during a recession, which means security specialists, police officers, and other security positions will still be in demand.

Try teaching.
Education is another good career possibility. If you enjoy teaching, many public schools will hire new teachers before they are certified as long as they work toward their certification during the year. If you don't have much experience, consider tutoring. It's a great way to pick up extra income.

Follow your passions.
Think seriously about what you are most passionate about. It could be that you can convert your ideas into a full-time career by starting your own business. You never know—you could be the one who comes up with the next big idea.

Even though the economy is unpredictable, there are always jobs out there if you look in the right places. Remember to network, keep your resume updated and error free, and stay positive. The right position will come along.
