The art of negotiation

Great communication is the key to successful negotiations. Make a reasonable case for adjustments to your job offer and employers will most likely consider your request. Here are helpful tips to artful job offer negotiation:

  • Show interest
    Emphasize your strong interest in the position and the company. Let them know you want to work for them.

  • Make your case
    Positively and professionally point out the areas of the job offer where you would like to see adjustments. Clearly state your needs and why they are necessary.

  • Provide a solution
    If you have needs that are missing, show them a way in which the company can help you meet them.

  • Demonstrate value
    Remind the potential employer of the value you would bring to the organization.

  • Listen & consider
    Once you have made your points, listen openly to the responses you are given.

  • Give it time
    Negotiations can take varying amounts of time. The individual you are working with may not have the power to make job offer adjustments. Be patient if you have to wait for a response.

  • Await the results
    Once your negotiations are complete and you have either an amended offer or have been told the offer cannot change, it’s time to thank and think. Thank the potential employer for discussing the points in question and ask for more time to think about the offer.
