Once you have created a list of potential references, it’s time to find out who is willing to talk. Your next step is to contact each individual to get their permission to use him or her as a reference and to gauge their ability to provide a strong reference. You can do the latter by asking the following questions:
While you might feel awkward asking these questions, it is always better to know an individual’s willingness to provide a strong recommendation now, rather than risking a weak referral later. You may learn that some people will prefer not to be used as a reference. Don’t argue with them. Stay professional and always thank them for their consideration.
When you do find an individual willing to provide the positive, strong reference you need, confirm his or her phone number, e-mail, title and address. You’ll also want to determine how he or she would like to be contacted by prospective employers.
