Managing your references includes controlling when their names are given out. Ideally, you want to alert your references before they get a call from anyone. Here are some helpful guidelines on when and how to give references:
-
Do not include your references on your resume or in your cover letter.
-
Do not send them with ad responses or target letters.
-
Do not list references at online career hubs. You should maintain control over who gets these names and when and protect the privacy of your references.
-
You may not always use the same references for all opportunities. Determine which of your references will most effectively "sell" your qualifications for the position under discussion, and use only their names.
-
When you do hit upon the right opportunity to share a reference directly with a potential employer, mention that if they have any problems contacting a reference you will be happy to get involved.
