Administrative and Clerical Worker Confidence on the Rise

  • Majority of workers remain optimistic about job security
  • Almost four in 10 likely to look for new jobs
  • Workers less optimistic about overall economy

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., July 31, 2006 — The confidence of U.S. workers who are in administrative and clerical positions rose slightly in the second quarter of 2006 as more workers reported confidence in their personal employment situation, according to the latest Spherion® Employment Report survey conducted by Harris Interactive® on behalf of Spherion Corporation (NYSE:SFN). The Administrative and Clerical Employee Confidence Index, a measure of workers’ confidence in the economy and their personal prospects, rose 2.2 percentage points to 54.1.

Every indicator of worker confidence was up or stable, with the exception of the macroeconomic outlook. Thirteen percent of workers felt the economy was getting stronger, compared to 15 percent in the first quarter. In addition, nearly four in 10 administrative and clerical workers (38 percent) continue to report it likely that they will seek new positions in the next 12 months, mirroring the overall workforce (37 percent).

“The confidence of workers in this sector has taken a notable step forward,” said Ralph Henderson, senior vice president of Staffing Services for Spherion. “From first quarter to second quarter, we’ve seen the gap between this sector and the overall workforce narrow by almost half, from 6.4 points to just 3.5 points. It’s possible that sustained hiring activity and continued expansion of responsibilities among administrative and clerical positions are contributing to the sense of optimism among these workers.”

Employee Confidence Index: The Administrative and Clerical Employee Confidence Index rose 2.2 percentage points in the second quarter of 2006 as more workers were optimistic about the future of their current employers (up eight percentage points), the availability of jobs (up six percentage points) and their own ability to find a new job (up four percentage points). Slightly fewer workers reported confidence in the overall strength of the economy, down two percentage points from first quarter. This sector continues to lag the overall U.S. Index, which declined 0.7 percentage points during the same period.

Methodology
The 2006 Spherion Employment Report is based on data from a Harris Interactive online survey conducted on behalf of Spherion Corporation. A U.S. sample of 9,022 employed adults, aged 18 years and older, of whom 821 work in administrative and clerical positions, was interviewed in a series of polls conducted between April 4-6, April 10-12, May 3-5, May 9-11, June 6-8 and June 14-16, 2006. Figures for age, sex, race/ethnicity, income, education and region were weighted where necessary to bring them in line with actual proportions in the population. Propensity score weighting adjusted for respondents’ propensity to be online.

With pure probability samples, with 100 percent response rates, it is possible to calculate the probability that the sampling error (but not other sources of error) is not greater than some number. With a pure probability sample of 9,022 U.S. employed adults one could say with a 95 percent probability that the overall results have a sampling error of +/- one percentage point, and the sampling error for the results of employed adults who work in administrative and clerical positions (n=821) is plus or minus three percentage points. However, that does not take other sources of error into account. This online survey is not based on a probability sample and therefore no theoretical sampling error can be calculated.
