Job Description

The Interim Legal Director is expected to lead the legal department, while working closely with the Interim President and CEO, other members of the Senior Leadership team, to include the Deputy Legal Directors, to oversee a legal department consisting of close to 170 professionals in six practice groups throughout the United States. This is an exciting and extremely rare opportunity to join Senior Leadership Team of well-established and prominent Law Firm that has committed to almost 50 years of seeking justice for the most vulnerable members of our society.

Responsibilities:
- Oversee Legal Departments strategic visioning and planning
- Participate in practice group strategic planning meetings, as well as legislative and litigation work planning meetings
- Oversee Legal Departments substantive work, including approving litigation proposals and settlements, and advising on issues that arise in cases and campaigns
- Supervise Deputy Legal Directors
- Oversee recruitment, hiring, salaries, and promotions within Legal Department
- Oversee personnel and performance issues within Legal Department; implement professional and leadership development training
- Oversee budgeting and financial matters for Legal Department
- Ensure compliance with reporting requirements in connection with 501(c)(3) and 501(C)(4) status
- Work with Interim President/CEO to effectuate transformation of workplace culture and climate
- Assess the structure of the legal department to ensure the Legal Department maximizes its impact
- Participate as representative of the Legal Department on the Senior Leadership Team, along with other department heads
- Represent Legal Department in interactions with the Board, including attending Board meetings and providing information and reports
- Coordinate legal work with work of other departments to ensure alignment and consistent vision
- Act as public spokesperson for particular campaigns, issues and/or litigation matters

Working hours: 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM

Education:
Doctorate

Experience:
10+ years

Qualifications:
- J.D. + a minimum of 10-15 years of litigation and/or legislative counsel and/or clinical teaching experience with a background in constitutional and civil rights cases
- Experience leading multi-faceted social justice campaigns that combine litigation, lobbying, public policy advocacy, media advocacy, and community organizing and mobilization and a demonstrated record of successfully moving those campaigns forward
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace and a track record of achieving same
- Senior level management experience in recruiting, training, managing, and motivating a team of diverse, high-performing lawyers and other social justice staff
