Job Description

Spherion has partnered with a local medical office to find a laboratory technician to join their primary care team! You will be responsible for clinical laboratory tests and procedures according to established laboratory guidelines and infection control measures. This position will also perform clerical functions associated with collection of specimens, supply ordering, maintaining lab logs, and correct labeling of specimens. Ensuring that collected specimens are adequate for accurate test values, and maintain strict controls and calibration of laboratory equipment.

Responsibilities:
Performs collection of specimens to include venipunctures, fingerstick, and other body fluids collection. Properly documents collection procedure and appropriate charge/procedure code(s) and locks Lab only visits.
Identifies the patient and labels all specimens for complete accuracy.
Reviews ABN with patient prior to venipuncture, answers patient questions, completes ABN per Medicare requirements and obtains patient signature.
Matches diagnosis code to correct lab code (LabCorp assigned test code) and requests clarification from physician/provider if there is not diagnosis to support the lab order.
Communicates with patient and uses other resources available to verify the reference lab appropriate to the insurance payer to prevent out of network charges to patient and/or loss of revenue to company.
Maintains log on the vouchers supplied for indigent services through Lab Corp and makes sure that the total amount is used each month.
Instructs patients on the process to collect random and 24-hour urine specimens as well as stool samples or other ???at home??? collections.
Tracks lab reports to make sure that reports are all received based on the orders management system of ECW and/or patient log.
Performs Blood Pressure checks and other Nurse Only visits.
Documents clinical findings on B/P and Nurse Only visits into the chart note including locking the note.
Immediately reports abnormal B/P, any adverse effects from injections or vaccines, or any patient symptoms/concerns to the physician.
Provides nursing coverage for the early a.m. providers as needed.
Primarily responsible for administering vaccines, testosterone injections, and depo injections making sure to verify the correct medication dosage and utilizing (3) patient identifiers per standard of practice. Utilizes GRITS as appropriate verification for vaccine coverage and documentation.
Follows clinical policy to document non-reactions before dismissing the patient from the clinic.
Performs routine maintenance and calibrations (quality controls) on all lab equipment and documents on laboratory logs.
Maintains VFC according to state regulations, and count of private stock vaccines, appropriately informing management to ensure availability.
Monitor refrigerator temp and follow neccessary process in the event of a prolonged electrical outage.
Understands the importance of strict infection control measures in the laboratory environment and adheres to these guidelines of cleanliness and organization daily.

Working hours: 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM

Skills:
Work is performed in a typical outpatient, medical setting. Frequent exposure to communicable diseases and must wear protective gear to promote infection control measures in the lab. Requires manual dexterity to perform injections, other tests, and vaccinations on the patient. Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range. Requires occasional overtime to complete tasks for the day. Requires working with patients of various ages and medical conditions which may include: pulling, kneeling, lifting and assisting patients who are physically handicapped at various stages.

Experience:
1-4 years

Qualifications:
Current Certified Medical Assistant certification required.
Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
Lab Tech certification or work experience in medical office laboratory highly desirable.
Minimum (2) years medical experience.
Good venipuncture and injection techniques.
Basic understanding of lab tests, normal lab values, recommended vaccine schedules, and how to handle adverse reactions.
Basic understanding of lab & diagnosis codes to match for billing purposes.
Demonstrated organizational and problem-solving abilities.
Emphasis on ability to communicate effectively with patients and families based on their background and literacy level.
Knowledge of engineering, personal protective equipment and workplace controls for a lab.
Knowledge of how to calibrate and run controls on laboratory equipment.
