Job Description

The Health Information Management Technician, under the general supervision of the Reception Supervisor, is responsible for pulling, filing and delivering charts; daily scanning; reviewing medical records for offsite storage; ensure accuracy, quality and security of the health records; filing medical information in records; faxing; processing mail; maintaining medical records with confidentiality and accuracy; and answering telephone requests for charts and/or medical information release.

- Identifies, organizes and scans appropriate health and administrative information into Epic within established timeframes.
- Reviews patient data and Epic formatting to ensure completeness and accuracy of each record.
- Processes requests for medical records using HIPAA guidelines and established procedures, picks up and delivers faxes to appropriate areas, sorts and refiles returned charts, and assists in the transfer and retrieval of inactive medical records to offsite storage
- Thoroughly reviews records daily to ensure appropriate data has been abstracted into Epic.
- Documents incoming patient records. Numbers, sorts and files all documentation and correspondence into charts.
- Maintains strict confidentiality when handling and discarding records. Prepares new charts and repairs damaged charts
- Answers telephone promptly and courteously, responds to medical information release requests and answers general questions.
- Picks up, sorts, and applies postage to daily outgoing mail.
- Watches for deceased patients via obituaries and death certificates. Notes date of death in Epic and alerts designated business office staff.

Working hours: 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM

- Computer, Microsoft office proficiency
- Previous health information management/medical records, scanning and clinic experience.
- Critical thinking
- Customer service oriented
- Excellent organization, planning and prioritization skills
- Clear and effective written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to perform multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment

High School

1-4 years

- RHIT or RHIA certification highly preferred!
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Experience working with medical terminology, medical records, and familiarity with scanning and indexing
- Knowledge of billing procedures, CPT-4/ICD-9 coding and Epic or another EMR preferred
