We are seeking a mid-level Automation Mechanical Design Engineer to join our Mechanical Design Engineering department in Bay City, MI. This role focuses heavily on the technical creation and detailing of automated machinery and tooling. The ideal candidate is a "hands-on" digital designer who thrives in a high-production CAD environment, spending approximately 97% of their time at a workstation and 3% on the shop floor for occasional measurements and design reviews. This position is 100% in-person, reporting to the facility in Bay City, MI.
Responsibilities:
- Develop mechanical machine concepts, designs, and detailed drawings for machines and specialized tooling.
- Create comprehensive Bills of Material (BOM), purchase specifications, and component specifications.
- Perform necessary engineering calculations to ensure design integrity and write PFMA (Potential Failure Mode and Effects Analysis) reports as needed.
- Detail and check drawings for machines and tooling; prepare and send out PDF or 3D STEP files to machine shops for quoting.
- Act as a technical bridge by communicating with sales engineers for concepts, purchasing for build releases, and assembly personnel to ensure design intent is met.
- Maintain and update records of all changes made to the original design throughout the build process.
- Attend job line-ups and project meetings.
- Communicate directly with customers, shop managers, and fellow mechanical design engineers.
- Assist the sales department with sketches and conceptual layouts for new quotes.
Skills:
- Helpful to have a solid understanding of pneumatics.
Qualifications:
- Experience in mechanical design for automation.
- A Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering is welcomed but not required if supplemented by significant relevant work experience.
- Must be skilled and familiar with AutoCAD (2D), Inventor (3D), and Solidworks (3D).
- Ability to perform occasional measurements of machinery; no heavy lifting or physical assembly is required.
- This is a fully in-person position at our Bay City facility.
