Responsibilities:
The Physical Therapist will be responsible for a full scope of patient care duties, including:
- Patient Examination and Diagnosis: Reviewing patient medical history, conducting comprehensive physical examinations, and performing tests and measures (e.g., observing posture, walking, strength, and balance) to diagnose movement dysfunction and determine a prognosis.
- Treatment Planning: Developing and implementing individualized, evidence-based treatment plans that outline patient goals and expected outcomes, in collaboration with the patient, their family, and other healthcare providers.
- Therapeutic Intervention: Administering a variety of physical therapy techniques, including therapeutic exercise, manual therapy (hands-on techniques), gait training, functional activities, and pain-relieving modalities (such as heat, cold, or electrical stimulation).
- Progress Monitoring and Documentation: Evaluating and recording patient progress, modifying the plan of care as needed, and maintaining accurate and timely patient records in compliance with all state and federal regulations.
- Patient and Family Education: Educating patients and their families on the recovery process, home exercise programs, and long-term strategies for promoting health, wellness, and an active lifestyle to prevent future injury.
- Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Coordinating treatment and communicating effectively with physicians, nurses, Physical Therapist Assistants (PTAs), Occupational Therapists (OTs), and other members of the healthcare team.
- Supervision: Providing direct supervision and guidance to Physical Therapist Assistants and aides in accordance with Michigan state law.
- Discharge Planning: Developing and implementing comprehensive discharge plans to ensure a successful transition from active therapy.
Skills:
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and motivational skills, with the physical ability to perform the duties of the role, including lifting and moving patients.
Qualifications:
Candidates for this position must meet the following non-negotiable requirements for practice in Michigan:
- Education: Successful completion of a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree from a physical therapy educational program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE).
- Licensure: Current and unrestricted Physical Therapist License issued by the Michigan Board of Physical Therapy (part of LARA).
- Examination: Successful passage of the National Physical Therapy Examination (NPTE) and the Michigan Physical Therapist Jurisprudence Exam.
Training (Michigan Specific):
- Completion of a one-time training in the identification of victims of human trafficking.
- Completion of 2 hours of Implicit Bias Training for each year of the renewal cycle (a total of 2 hours for a two-year cycle).
- Completion of at least 1 Professional Development Requirement (PDR) credit in the area of pain and symptom management for each renewal period.
- Background: Ability to pass a criminal background check as required for Michigan licensure.
