Spherion VT is recruiting for a Controller to work with our client in Waterbury Center, VT. In this role, you will lead the financial operations and accounting strategy for a joint action agency serving Vermont's municipal electric utilities. Reporting to executive leadership, you will manage everything from day-to-day internal controls to high-level financial reporting and audit preparation. This is a pivotal leadership role requiring a blend of technical GAAP/GASB expertise and the ability to translate complex financial data into actionable insights for diverse stakeholders.

Responsibilities:
- Oversee the complete month-end and year-end close processes, ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting.
- Lead the development of annual budgets, long-range financial forecasts, and comprehensive cash-flow analyses.
- Act as the primary point of contact for external auditors and ensure all practices align with GAAP and GASB standards.
- Design, implement, and monitor robust internal financial policies and compliance frameworks to mitigate risk.
- Direct the accounting department, handling recruitment, professional development, and performance management for the finance team.
Working hours: 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM
Skills:
- Prior accounting experience within electric utilities, municipalities, or non-profit sectors.
- Familiarity with the unique regulatory and reporting requirements of government-related entities (GASB).
- A track record of streamlining financial workflows and optimizing ERP system utilization.
- Experience leading teams through system migrations or significant organizational policy shifts.
- Understanding of the local utility landscape and Vermont-specific financial compliance.

Qualifications:
- 7???10 years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 3 years in a management or supervisory capacity.
- Deep mastery of GAAP (and ideally GASB) principles and the ability to manage complex audit cycles.
- Hands-on experience with major ERP systems (e.g., NetSuite, SAP, Oracle) and advanced Excel modeling capabilities.
- Ability to present financial data clearly to executive leadership and non-financial municipal stakeholders.
- Experience working directly with senior leadership to drive organizational strategy through financial insights.
