Responsibilities:
This position performs specialized accounting functions for the WRS and other employee benefit plans. Key responsibilities include:
- Complex Financial Analysis: Independently performing calculations and reconciliations across multiple data sources, systems, and subledgers in accordance with GAAP
- Fund Management: Managing multiple appropriations and funds to ensure accurate financial standing
- Audit and Adjustments: Performing and reviewing member account adjustments following policies and state statutes
- Process Improvement: Actively participating in the analysis, development, and implementation of procedures to ensure efficient work plans and internal controls
- Reporting: Completing journal entries and preparing financial statements or reports for complex benefit programs
Qualifications:
- Education: Bachelors degree in Accounting or equivalent professional experience
- Experience: 2-5 years of work-related experience in transactional accounting
- Technical Skills: Knowledge of GAAP (specifically government application) and ERP systems (PeopleSoft preferred). Proficiency in Microsoft Office and database applications
- Analytical Ability: Strong critical thinking and data-gathering skills to research and resolve complex financial problems
- Reconciliation: Proven ability to reconcile accounts on a periodic basis across disparate accounting systems
- Communication: Effective written and oral communication skills with the ability to thrive in a collaborative team environment
- Internal Controls: Strong foundational knowledge of internal control principles and the ability to develop financial policies
