In this position, you will be the backbone of the safety department-developing critical programs, leading incident investigations, and ensuring our crews return home safely. You will have the opportunity to represent the company at major maritime industry events and provide hands-on support during vessel layup and fit-out.
Schedule & Availability:
- Standard Shift: 8-hour shift occurring between the hours of 7:00 AM - 6:00 PM.
- Flexibility: Flexible scheduling options are available within those core hours.
- On-Call: This position requires on-call availability to respond to safety incidents or urgent vessel needs.
- Travel: Travel is required to support vessels during layup, fit-out, and for safety inspections of vessels and layberths.
Responsibilities:
- Safety Program Leadership: Develop and implement health and safety policies (SMS) in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
- Data & Reporting: Assist the SQE Director in compiling data for safety team meetings; draft Engineering Bulletins, Lessons Learned, and the Safety Line Newsletter.
- Compliance & Audits: Coordinate and attend internal/external audits and inspections. Manage the drug testing program (DER).
- Incident Investigation: Analyze accidents and near-misses to determine root causes and implement preventive measures.
- Field Operations: Travel to vessels to perform safety inspections of vessels and layberths, specifically during winter work, layup, and fit-out.
Preferred Skills:
- Education: Degree from a Maritime Academy is preferred.
- Vessel Experience: Direct experience working on or managing vessels (ISM Code experience) is highly preferred.
- Safety Standards: Familiarity with USCG SIP.
- Industry Passion: A strong, demonstrated interest in maritime safety regulations and procedures.
Required Skills:
- Credentials: Must possess or have the ability to obtain a TWIC.
- Technical Proficiency: Expert knowledge of MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Regulatory Knowledge: Deep understanding of marine shipping industry legislation and standards.
- Physical Requirements: Ability to embark/disembark large, high-freeboard vessels via a pilot ladder and/or gangway.
- Availability: Willingness to be on-call and travel as needed.
