3. Work with a recruiter to stand out from the crowd

Even a strong resume can sit unread when it enters through an online portal. But recruiters offer a different route, one built on firsthand relationships and often accelerated hiring schedules. Understanding the difference that working with a recruiter can make helps you make the best use of your time when you’re in a job search time crunch.

Online portals can slow you down

Getting hired in Q4 often comes down to who gets seen first, and most large employers route applications through an applicant tracking system that scans resumes for keywords before a person ever looks at them. That means qualified candidates can get filtered out when their wording doesn't match the posting, and during peak season the volume of resumes only grows. Bypassing this automated resume screening gives you a clear edge, and it beats scrolling endless listings of temp-to-hire jobs near me.

What a Spherion recruiter does differently

A Spherion recruiter works directly with hiring managers at different companies, so they know exactly what each opening needs in a candidate. Your resume goes to a person who's expecting it, often with context about your strengths that a portal can't capture. Recruiters also hear about unadvertised jobs before they're ever posted, which matters when roles can fill—or be flooded with applications—within days. And candidates who know how to work with a recruiter by sharing their availability, pay expectations and skills up front get matched up even faster.

4. Update your resume

You don't need a full rewrite to compete for quick-turnaround positions. These fourth quarter job search tips take about an hour and help a recruiter or hiring manager see your fit in seconds. Make the changes tonight, and you'll be ready to apply the moment a good opening appears. Each one targets what employers look for first when they're trying to fill a role fast.

Clean up your layout

Take a moment to make sure your resume is formatted correctly, regardless of whether you choose to work with a recruiter or continue submitting your resume through an online portal. Check to see if your resume is mobile-friendly, since recruiters often pull resumes up on their phones. Use a professional font like Calibri, Arial, or Helvetica in 10–12 pt sizes, and avoid complex formatting like headers, columns, tables, images, or graphics. In the event your resume is submitted through a portal, you want to make sure that the ATS can read all elements of your resume cleanly.

Mirror the language

Pull the exact job titles, tools, and certifications from the posting and use them in your skills and experience sections. If a warehouse listing mentions forklift certification, RF scanners, or inventory counts, your resume should name them too, as long as you have the experience. Matching terminology helps your resume clear automated filters and reads faster to a human reviewer. Keep it honest, and cut anything that doesn't relate to the role you're pursuing.

Add numbers

Replace general duties with measurable outcomes wherever you can. Processing 150 orders per shift or resolving 40 customer calls a day tells a manager far more than a line about being responsible for orders. If it’s relevant, add any attendance or safety records, which matter in fast-paced operations. Concrete figures show you can handle volume, which is exactly what peak-season employers need.
